April 14, 2003 is the deadline for compliance with the HIPAA Privacy Rule, which mandates all health care providers have privacy standards in place to prevent the inappropriate use or disclosure of protected health information. Failure to comply could result in criminal and or civil penalties. Privacy is defined as having policies and procedures in place to control who has access to protected health information.
